Soap Gone Rancid

Sometimes things go wrong… terribly wrong! All I can do is laugh a little, whine about it a little, learn a lot and maybe have somethin’ to blog about. Hopefully though I will not end up with a whole category titled “Soap Gone Rancid”. This is my first big experience with my soap getting messed up and, of course, it was the largest amount I had dared to make and mix together at once so far.

Shredded Soap ~ Batch Gone Rancid

What I learned is that I will never mix different batches of soap together again. As you can see, the soap shreds (which happened by hand, whew!) are two different colors because it is two different batches of cold process soap that I mixed up, cured and then shredded together. I’m thinking that one of the bottles of vegetable oil that I used was far from its peak of freshness.

My intention with the shreds was to re-melt them down when I wanted to make small batches of soap with other various additives like essential oil or oatmeal. I still intend to make some wonderful soaps for this season and won’t let this 6.5 pound box of “failure” keep me down. It can still be used for clothes washing… perhaps I’ll make a local thrifty person happy and give it away!

Best Friends With Bracelets To Prove It

So. I have a best girl friend, as every girl should have! She is the salt in my bread .. I mean, she’s really cool and I think we make life a little easier for each other. I met this lovely lady during high school, on the bus!, in Minnesota.. I think the year was 2001…

BFFs

10 years later (and then some) here we are! Still BFF’ing it up. So we mutually decided we could commit to BFF jewelry.. The kind where they split up a saying between the two pieces. Not long after that conversation she sneakily had my aunt, Charlene Paulson, custom make us matching bracelets that say “Best Friends”!

When I was visiting her she put my bracelet on my wrist for the first time and we jingle-jangled together all day. I am ‘st ends’. BEST BRACELET (AND BEST FRIEND) EVER!

Ben, Get Off That Hen : A poem by yours truly, the non-poet.
Little mouse ran out of the house, to find his brother Ben.
When he reached the yard he laughed so hard.
Ben was riding a hen!

Isn’t he CUTE? I’m totally in love with him and will miss him. He belongs to a gal in Colorado who mailed me hair that she brushed off of her own cat over the spring months. It’s so awesome to see this one of a kind mouse outside of my mind’s eye and share it with others.

There are many steps to creating something like this, and, as you can see, at some stages it looks really odd and makes ya wonder if it really will end up cute. The finishing stages when I stitch on the eyes and felt on the other facial features (making it come alive!) is my most favorite part.

Washing Cat Hair Before Felting   Felt Mouse w/ Cat Hair ~ In Progress

These are the steps I took to create this one of a kind cutie:

  • I cleaned the cat hair thoroughly but carefully
  • felted a mouse shaped form out of core wool
  • wet felted a tail and ears out of colored wool
  • covered the wool form with the gal’s cat hair
  • attached the ears and tail
  • stitched on glass bead ‘eyes’
  • stitched his little hands together
  • felted a little nose and smiling mouse mouth

I put hours into creations like this and I feel that it’s a wonderful way to spend my time. If you’re interested in a custom mouse or other animal for yourself or a loved one, check out this Etsy listing I made using this mouse as my example.

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp (Gluten Free)

This was delicious. My first time really cooking “gluten free”. I really love the coconut flour and can’t wait to make some more foods using alternative flours!
Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp - Gluten Free

2 cups strawberries
1/2 cup white sugar

~6 Tbsp melted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup oats *gluten free
1/2 cup coconut flour

nutmeg

Mix rhubarb and strawberries with white sugar in a pan (I used a glass pie pan). Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl and then cover rhubarb and strawberries with it. Bake for ~30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Harvesting Wild Mushrooms – “Chicken Of The Woods” – Laetiporus

During August of 2010 I was enjoying some time in Minnesota with my aunt and got into talking about local wild mushrooms. She told me about the chicken of the woods – how unmistakable it is with its shelf-like structure, no stems, no gills and bright orange color. The very next day while we were enjoying a picnic dinner in her front lawn I spotted one growing right by her garden on a sawed-off portion of a big oak tree!

The odds of that happening were so slim that I feel like “it was meant to be”. We carefully cut the mushroom and sauteed it with onions, green pepper and butter the following evening. The level of deliciousness blew my mind and I have been forever hooked on this mushroom. It is one of my most favorite mushrooms, if not one of my all time favorite foods ever. The following year I was at her house again in August and we found the chicken growing back! (so we ate it again!)

Over the winter down in Missouri I grew my own oyster mushrooms which turned out GREAT. Then in the spring I found jelly ear mushrooms in the wild, at their peak of being jelly-like, and ate some for the first time. They were more of a texture than a flavor but I would eat them again.

Any way you slice it (ha!) the chicken of the woods mushroom is a superior mushroom. Ever since finding the one at my aunt’s house in 2010 I have been looking for more. It wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago in Nisswa, Minnesota that luck struck me and I found more — Much, much more!

OH GLORIOUS CHICKEN!!!!!

Chicken of the Woods - Wild Mushroom - Minnesota June 2012

It was growing on the roots of a living oak tree. There was a lot of dirt and grass incorporated into it so I spent many hours meticulously cleaning what I wanted to keep. I had a couple friends to help too but eventually everybody petered out and thought I was nuts. Then I cooked some and they understood!

Doesn’t it look a lot like chicken? The fibers run in strands like muscle tissue and stay that way after cooking, the coloring is similar to white meat or seafood and even the amount of moisture in the mushroom is similar to meat. Since I no longer make chicken a reoccurring item in my diet it’s hard for me to say “it tastes like chicken too”. To me, it has it’s own flavor which is hard to describe but very, very wonderful and I would say “different” than other typical cap/stem mushrooms.

I cleaned, ate and froze the remainder of over 6 POUNDS of Chicken of the Woods.

I’ll be sure to share some recipes soon, as these mushrooms are not to be eaten raw. So far I have sauteed them, added them to a chimichanga, and made them into a veggie burger. I think a creamy white sauce over pasta and spinach sounds good, along with marinating them before grilling, and I can’t forget… making “chicken nuggets” by breading and frying them!

Sleeping In Tents: 2012

I love sleeping in tents. I’m in one right now! I have power, wireless internet, and sparkling snowflake lights for ambiance. Hehehe… and I will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the frogs croaking.

Needle Felted Kitty Cat Figure!

Meet Sammy. Sam. Samson. Sambert! He is a soft orange cream and white cat that spends his days charming one of my dearest friends. His BFF is a yarn ball, he is a fan of tuna fish, and he is scared of bubbles. He is an indoor cat with big dreams.
Jackie & Sammy     Sammy

Since Sammy is so gosh darn adorable and loved (and also getting up there in years) I requested a bunch of his hair. My friend brushed and brushed all winter long (he loves it) and saved up enough hair for me to make this needle felted kitty cat figure:

It is made of sheep wool for the inside/shape of the cat and then it is covered with real cat hair. The tail is all cat hair. The white detail on his chest is white wool since I didn’t have all white cat hair. It was created by a process called needle felting — small barbed needles are pushed into the wool countless times which essentially weave the fibers together.

Here it is before I added the white details to his chest:

Believe it or not, this was my first needle felted cat! I’m sure he’ll be cherished for years by my friend. Oh, he is also Sammy approved!
