Needle Felted Bunny Rabbit Figure Made With Cat Hair

Meet “Little Timmy Bunny” … for he is actually the little guy that got me into needle felting little characters in the first place!

Before my introduction into wool roving I started working with wool yarn – knitting it and using the washing machine to felt it. I’d make purses and then needle felt designs on the front. However, knitting is so boring that as soon as I discovered wool roving I stopped doing it and even misplaced my needles so I couldn’t do it even if I wanted to. Fast forward a year and I’ve constantly got needle felted projects going on! I truly love it.

Anyway, I made Timmy bunny using un-dyed wool batting for the inside and cat hair for the outside. A friend of mine loved her cat dearly and upon its natural death, she shaved its long hair to keep for sentimental purposes. Over the years she didn’t do anything with it and was cleaning out her closet so she gave it to me. I rarely turn down unique crafting materials. (Yes, I washed it, carefully, in a nylon pantyhose sock with mild soap – much like washing wool.)

Just yesterday the Etsy blog posted an article about crafting with cat hair. My little Timmy bunny is up on the article in the ‘related items’ section. Way cool! My favorite thing about the whole article is the comments people wrote on it… “I love my cat, but EWWW!” .. hehehe. Read it!: http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/how-tuesday-crafting-with-cat-hair

And order one of your own little Tim my bunnies through my Etsy shop!

Felted Wool Butterfly! My First One!

Light, colorful and 3D! Made by wet felting and needle felting techniques. Very hands-on free form sculpting using wool. My first ever felted wool butterfly!

I’m going to make a lot more in different colors and attach them to felted scarves and other projects. This success has me jumping up and down excited 🙂

Custom Hollow Book Project Complete

I got a request for a custom book project at the beginning of this month and finished it tonight. As always, I cut the pages out by hand and then apply glue, let it dry, trim it some more and then paint it. Sometimes I add colorful paper. This one is a lot of black paint. The book is a vintage copy of Pet Sematary by Stephen King.

Felted Scarves in Full Swing

Recently I’ ve been busy making wet and nuno felted scarves out of silk and wool.

Experimenting with dye on silk has yielded some good results. Except for one – I found out that using any bleach on the silk pretty much eats it away quickly and turns it yellow. Oops!

Felted Scarves

The way the brown and gold scarf turned out really made me happy, as well as the purple one. Yes they are as fun to touch as they look – they are very soft. I started adding felted flower accents and think it makes them stunning. Check them out!

I made these two scarves to order last week. My Vampire Bite Scarf and my Woodsy Owl Scarf. Awesome as usual if I don’t say so myself.

Abstract Oil Painting

Oil painting is something I have dreamed of doing for many years. I am so thankful I can dig into it now. It feels as though a lot of my other art is CRAFT but painting is definitely real ART. Painting is a challenge – especially oil painting – because it is harder to deal with the paint and chemicals than one would think. I just dug in and taught myself…. figured it out by DOING (and getting paint all over!). It will a be a never-ending process of learning how the paint moves and “see” more clearly what I want my paintings to look like and get my brushes and knives to make it come to life. I’m starting with abstract paintings and will move on to more visualized paintings some day.

This painting I finished last night. I started it a couple weeks ago by painting the canvas black. Then I cut masking tape into thin strips and stuck them on… painted.. and peeled them up when I was done. It was so FUN to see the painting change even after I was done pushing the paint around. I found out that I am very good at making BROWN! And that a dark maroon red mixed with manganese blue instantly looks black. My favorite part of this painting is where the orange has some blue on it. What’s your favorite part?

This painting actually is on its 3rd transformation. The first photo is the first rendition, the 2nd one can be seen in the corner of the photo at the bottom of this post because I didn’t actually take a photo of it by itself – I didn’t like it enough at that stage! – but that was good because it motivated me to make it what you see here in the 2nd photo. Much more abstract and wild. I can’t say that is is finished yet but I am going to wait for it to be mostly dry to add more and finally sign it.

The small square one here is the only one that is complete. Although I have not signed it yet either. I’m thinking I should sign my paintings with my Z rather than my given name. More “Me”.

Incense Cones and Sticks Photo Shoot

One thing I know to be true is that on Etsy (and anywhere else online) you must have product photos that dazzle the eyes and make people want to add them to their favorites and treasuries. I already have some nice incense cone photos that I took over a year+ up in my shop but I recently got some incense STICKS to soak and sell so I needed photos of them. I’ve learned that when in the mood — shoot, shoot, shoot! Shoot I did… I am very happy with my results. Here are a few… but check out my Etsy shop – Virtualdistortion – to see them in action!
